Science Meeting

1. Updates:

• Brian Schlining and image analysis
  • Science has met with him to discuss/explain anomolies in the comp spot intensities.
  • Chris S. states that the comp spots are not reliable indicators of background as they are very sensitive to small changes in what we a.)lay down on the membrane, or b.) signal probe concentration.  This will need much work to fine tune.  Meanwhile, Brian has enough to continue his image analysis work, which will pay dividends for the upcoming MRI.

• John Ryan and his paper.
  • This was his email:
    • a) Paper
      QC and analysis of 2008 environmental data (satellite, AUV, moorings) is done.  This provided clear results relevant to explaining / supporting
      the probe array signals, comparing 2007/2008, and highlighting observing system needs & challenges.  I am culling the results pool and producing
      final figures and an outline this week, to be circulated.
      b) Drifting ESP
      The trajectory data from last year's drifting ESP test has been requested from Gene.  When I get it, I'll provide the data and a simple velocity analysis to the ESP team, AUV Ops & the Rajan lab.

• Array printing update
  • Last Saturday we replaced Cavro pump.  Nilo coming in this weekend to print arrays, but his schedule is becoming busier at school.  Roman may have to step in and help.  Two 'spare' printer kits have been ordered and delivered.  We estimate a need of 70 HAB arrays, and 12 (Bac arrays?) for Gordon.

• Bruce/Mack error analysis
  • Roman will put data in Jim's temp box.  Looks like Bruce had one error, but Mack errored on each run.  Jim will work up.

• NEO deployment plan
  • Depoyment on May 20 will be Roman, Julie, and a TBD.
  • Must replace ball screw that came undone; use a new one from Betty, not one from GG.
  • Get Brent to look at pressure-out-of-range issue
  • remove incorrect reagent
  • CTD driver issue.  Will talk to Brent about approaching Bob Herlien to write drivers for the newest Seabird CTD's.

• Chris P. paper progress
  • Has been gathering papers for the abstract, introduction, and begun writing methods
  • Will bring a package of figures next week
  • looking at submission to PNAS or Applied Env. Micro.
